Tide thumps Vols. New Member Weekend. Avondale Tutoring Club.

Hey sportsfans!

Another fun week of sports and sports-like activities to report.

Sid's tours of college campuses continued this past weekend when she invaded Tuscaloosa to root the Tide on to victory over the Tennessee Volunteers. The Tide cruised to a 45-10 victory.

While Sid was in T-Town, Em was with her 9th grade buds at the BBYO New Members Weekend. Held at picturesque Camp Cosby in Talladega on Lake Logan Martin, kids from several southern cities were together for the weekend.

Each Monday for the past three years, Sid and friends have meet at our neighborhood library to help tutor the students from the nearby Avondale Elementary School. The Altamont students in the Avondale Tutoring Club do homework, play games, make projects and eat snacks with the younger students. It has been a rewarding experience for Sid, so much so that she brought Em into the tutoring club this year. Very proud of both girls for this work.

Anyone hotter or more clutch than Big Papi? David Ortiz is an awesome post-season hitter. He's loaded the Bosox on his back in the World Series. Fun to watch. They could clinch the title tomorrow night in Fenway. It would be the first time the Red Sox will have celebrated a World Championship in Fenway since 1918 with Babe Ruth. I'm sure Michael Wacha and the Cardinals will not just rollover to let that happen. Would love the see Game 7 in Fenway on Halloween. Imagine the costumes in the stands!

Sid is competing this weekend in the Walter Trumbauer Festival. "Trumbauer", as it’s affectionately known, is an annual Alabama secondary theatre festival, one of the largest such events in the southeast region. Now in its 71st year, the festival is named after Walter Trumbauer, a former theatre professor at The University of Montevallo who taught theatre for many years. "Trumbauer" celebrates the high school theatre experience. Students from 9th through 12th grades compete in 28 individual performance and/or technical theatre events. Scholarships are awarded to the winners. Break a leg, Sid!

Gotta love Mike & Mike.: Cookies!

A very nice article on this year's Chucky Mullins award winner: Mike Marry.

Hoops games begin in two weeks for Em and the Altamont girls. Looking for big things from #3.
Butterfingers are my fav. I'm taking donations beginning tonight.
Still pondering my Halloween costume. Suggestions?
Ready for the fall weather to stay here. Rollercoaster weather is for the birds.
Lots of family birthdays coming up. Cake!

Have a great week everyone!

Barons capture the title. FOUR LITTLE GIRLS: Birmingham 1963. Team Kate has Hope. Banana crepes with Nutella? The Lovelady Center. Dores down Dawgs. Luke Bryan.

Hey sportsfans!

The past few weeks this fall has been an exciting one sports-wise. A few weeks ago we celebrated the Minor League, Southern League (AA) Championship with the Barons this season. With a new stadium, major league talent and excellent ownership, the Barons had a magical season. Hopefully they will keep some of that talent in Birmingham next season. I doubt it though. Keep an eye on Micah Johnson. Fast as lightening. Exciting player who should be in the Show next year.

The same night the Barons captured the Southern League title, Sid performed in a very important play.  "FOUR LITTLE GIRLS: Birmingham 1963" featuring students from Altamont, Ramsay and Phillips Academy. This play helped to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church. Very proud of Sid for being part of this play.

Two weeks ago Team Kate has Hope was once again a top team at the annual Race for the Cure in downtown Birmingham. TKHH was strong with 100 team members and close to $10k raised. Way to go TKHH!

Earlier this month Emily and her pals spent a week in France during Fall Project Week. Normandy and Paris were the main stops. Believe it or not, of all the great food offered in Paris, banana crepes with Nutella was the preferred food of the week. Sadly she did not bring home any Toblerone chocolate.

Sidney and several classmates spent Fall Project Week volunteering at The Lovelady Center in Irondale. This is a shelter for women and children in need of a fresh start.

Big fun in Nashville this past weekend. With our buddies from Knoxville, the Chastain family, we rooted the Dores to victory over the #15 ranked Georgia Bulldogs on campus. Great crowd. Exciting game. We also watched the baseball team practice and the women's soccer team take on Arkansas. A couple of meals at SATCO were awesome as always. Saturday night all the kids went to the Luke Bryan / Dirks Bentley concert.

And on Monday, we rested. Or at least recharged. Em is in the second week of preseason hoops practice. Games begin in mid-November. Sid is busily preparing for voice and dance recitals in December. She is also preparing for college theatre auditions later this semester. More news about this later.

This Wednesday begins the World Series. Cardinals v. Red Sox. I like the Cardinals in 6. Superb pitching. Clutch hitting. Should be a great series.

Still trying to get a handle on the mash-up of Thanksgiving and Hanukah.
Can anyone dethrone The Tide? Doesn't look like it so far. However, LSU, Mizzou and either FSU or Oregon stand in the way.

Happy fall, ya'll!
