95!

Hey sportsfans!

What a thrill! What might be the best sports event of the year, on Sunday TSG played catch with Papa Max on Papa's 95th birthday. Papa displayed his usual athletic form in firing several strikes. Hope to do it again next year.

I'm starting to question the seriousness of this spring lax team. Should I be worried that six of the girls wore dance tutus to practice today? Since I haven't learned all the kids names yet, I cannot confirm these six are the Kathryns/Katherines.

Games are fast approaching. I hope this team starts to click soon. If they don't, it's going to be a looooong season. I'm sorry Em.

Em's first middle school track meet is this Friday at Hoover High School. Should be interesting and veeeerry cold! Hopefully her recent achilles injury will not prevent her from running in 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes. Coach Timmerman is looking for big things from our redhead.

Having a good week: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Brewers outfielder & NL MVP Ryan Braun won his appeal over a positive drug test & will not be suspended 50 games. An MLB source familiar with the history of game’s drug testing said none of the previous 12 major leaguers who appealed a positive result were able to overturn a suspension. Thus, even though successful appeals are not announced because of confidentiality, someone familiar with the process said Braun was the first major-leaguer to win an appeal.

Not having a good week: In a trial that revealed the lives of elite athletes at a top-notch school, a former University of Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely V faces 26 years in prison for the beating death of his former girlfriend amid a swirl of betrayal, distrust, anger and a culture of drinking.

The NBA Slam Dunk Contest was boring as was the all star game until D.Wade broke Kobe's nose in the third quarter. March Madness is almost upon us. Spring training has begun. Maybe I should find a fantasy baseball league to join. It's been several years since I last played in the Eight Man Out League.

Break a leg tonight, Sid. Local play audition in Leeds.
Have a great week everyone!

Track. Lax. Dance. Voice. Linsanity.

Hey sportsfans!

Welcome back. After a few weeks of non stop bar/bat mitzvahs, Em and Sid are back to their old tricks. Spring track, lacrosse, dance, voice and who knows what else might be on the spring agenda.

For those of you stuck in a time warp, Em celebrated her bat mitzvah a few weeks ago. As expected, she was magnificent! On to the thank you notes.

This past week, Em has started spring track for Altamont and lacrosse for the 6-8 grade girls team in Mountain Brook. Coach Meghan is leading the lax team again. Em looks to play a prominent role again this year on offense. Julia Bell, Sarah and Olivia all moved up to the high school teams. Frigid practices at Rathmell fields are scheduled for the next few weeks before games begin.

During the next few weeks Em will also be preparing for her first track meet with the middle school team. She's not sure what events she will participate in. No wonder Coach Timmerman has so many State champions! Check out the warm ups:

Friday night Emily was treated by the Sharffs to a fun evening in Tuscaloosa. They watched the No. 6 Alabama gymnastics team score a victory (197.650-196.125) over No. 5 Arkansas before a capacity crowd of 15,075 at Coleman Coliseum. It was the eight annual Power of Pink meet. The initiative, started by head coach Sarah Patterson in 2004 and expanded to included to include all women's sports in 2009, helps to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer in the West Alabama community.

Does anyone notice the 3' face in the background? Good stuff.

It has been reported that Alabama football coach Nick Saban sent Atlanta high school RB prospect Alvin Kamara 105 letters in one day. Kamara said of Saban's mass mailing: "It definitely caught my attention. But they're not my favorite college yet or anything like that." I wonder what the football department postage budge runs annually. Why can't they use email? I bet he signs with LSU.

Having a great few weeks: Jeremy Lin, Harvard educated, Asian-American NBA player and point guard for the New York Knicks has taken the League by storm. What a wonderful story. Basically a castoff player, undrafted, and recently cut by two other teams. He has scored the most points in his first seven games of any player in NBA history. Harvard is not known for producing NBA players. In fact Harvard students are more likely to become U.S. president (8) or Supreme Court justices (20), compared to NBA players less than 5). While the Knicks did lose this weekend for first time in seven games, the Linsanity is still running strong. Did you catch the SNL skit about him this weekend? Funny!

Having a great week: In 1899, the Sewanee Tigers went 12-0, including the ultimate road trip in winning five games in six days, all shutouts. One of the most impressive football seasons ever. Much like those famed Tigers, The Sports Guy just traveled through his own celebrated season as we attended
Michael, Nathan, Emily and Adam bar/bat mitzvahs in consecutive weeks. The beautiful thing about this run of mitzvahs is that I did not get tackled even once! Mazol tov to all their families. The Detroit Red Wings won its 23rd straight at Joe Louis Arena, setting an NHL multiple-season mark for home dominance by holding on to beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2 Sunday.

Not having as great week:Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports MLB has approved the trade of pitcher A.J. Burnett from the New York Yankees to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Before this weekend, the last time the University of Alabama had started a baseball season with an 0-3 record, Harry Truman was in the White House, Elvis Presley was unknown, Betty White was only 30 years old and gas cost 20 cents per gallon. The year was 1952, or 13 years before Alabama coach Mitch Gaspard was born. The Vanderbilt Commodores baseball season also got off to a bad start as they dropped three straight to the Stanford Cardinal.

Sid is crazily preparing for the spring dance recital. She will perform in many difficult numbers. Not sure about yet the voice recital. She is also auditioning soon for a couple of upcoming community plays. Also, she will be in the school play next month. She is very busy!!

Pitchers and catchers are coming! Pitchers and catchers are coming! Pitchers and catchers are coming!
Favorite month of the year is fast approaching. Spring training. March Madness. Change in seasons and clocks.
Happy birthdays fast approaching for UR (41) and Papa Max (95). Kennahurrah and lakashannah.
Have a great week everyone!
